Largely built by the Dutch in the 1640s this UNESCO world heritage site has its own unique charm amidst the paradise of Sri Lanka. A great deal of the original Dutch architecture remains and recently some has been lovingly restored. Entering the Fort through the English, or Dutch, gate and you seem to enter a different world. At once more peaceful than the world outside its Ramparts. These massive walls provide a perfect vantage point to view Galle town and the jungle beyond as well as across the ocean. During an international test match they also provide as near to a birds eye view of play as you can get.

The Fort has its own beaches perfect for morning and evening dips as well as excellent snorkling in the crystal clear waters. The many jewelry shops have been joined by the fabulous sparklie fashion boutique, Mimimango, and the internationally acclaimed Barefoot as well as the interior items Elephant Walk, making the Fort a must for shoppers.

The skyline shared between the Mosque, the Temple, a Dutch and an Anglican Church has been joined by the newest in the Aman stable - Amangalla - where the spa and barbershop, welcome to all, are making names for names for themselves. We also cannot fail to mention the Swiss Chef. The Eden Villas, whose front doors carefully conceal the oasis behind, all hail from a by gone era and have been beautifully renovated with air conditioning and pools blending with teak floor boards and hand selected furniture.

The Fort bustles by day but is deliciously quiet at night offering a Sri Lankan experience cushioned with a bit of style.
